The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced the 31st annual AVCA Division I All-America Teams for women's volleyball on Wednesday and senior libero Kim Maroon (a 2008 CVVC graduate) was selected to the third team.
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Senior libero Kim Maroon has been named to the 2011 AVCA All-Northeast Region squad for the second time in her career; it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
In a record-breaking season for Maroon she set an NCAA record for digs in a set as she concluded the season with 6.87. She led the NCAA in digs and also set a new BIG EAST single season record with 749 digs.
Maroon was named BIG EAST Libero of the Year for the second consecutive season and earned first team All-BIG EAST honors. She had 20 or more digs in a match on 20 occasions and tallied 40+ digs in a match three times. She also reached her 2,000th career dig this season, becoming the first player in Villanova history to reach 2,000 digs.
This is the second time Maroon has earned all region honors. She was an honorable mention selection in 2010 and named to the all-region squad in 2009. She is just one of three Villanova athletes to earn all-region honors.
The northeast region encompasses the America East Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, BIG EAST Conference, Ivy League, Patriot League and Providence College. Maroon is one of nine BIG EAST student-athletes who earned all-region honors.
Appalachian State volleyball placed two players on the Southern Conference’s all-conference team, as voted on by the league’s coaches and announced by the league office on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Senior middle blocker Alison Blasingame received a nod for first team all-SoCon honors after leading the Mountaineers in hitting percentage (.342), blocks (109) and block assists (104) while recording 236 kills on the season.
Blasingame currently ranks fifth in the Southern Conference and ranks 65th nationally in hitting percentage and is poised to finish in the top five in both single season and career-hitting percentage in ASU history.
Blasingame’s all-conference honors are the first of her career and make her the Apps first, first-team selection since Brittany Zahn earned the same honor in 2007.
Senior Kim Maroon (a 2008 CVVC Graduate, and two year starter on the 18National Team) was named the 2011 BIG EAST Libero of the Year, the conference office announced on Thursday night at the annual volleyball conference banquet at the Milwaukee Hilton.
This was the second consecutive year that Maroon has won the award. This year she set a new single-season BIG EAST record with 734 digs. She leads the NCAA in digs with 6.92. Maroon had 20 matches with 20+ digs and three matches this season with 40+. Maroon also earned a first team All-BIG EAST selection Thursday night.
This years alumni day was another enjoyable day for all. Around 20 alumni joined in the event, with our oldest member being the 2005 season. It was great to see everyone once again!
The 2008 18N Team finished 4th in the OPEN division of the Northeast National Qualifier, which is the highest finish of any 18's teams in the OPEN division of a National Qualifier in Old Dominion Region history.

The 2007 18N Team was the first United States team to defeat the #1 ranked team in the nation at that time, Club Long Beach, at Lone Star Classic Qualifier.

The 2007 Team on their way to the NEQ in Pittsburgh, PA stopped by the Flight 93 Memorial and signed a shirt which they left at the sight in memory of all that lost their lives on 9-11 to save others.

Junior Kim Maroon was named the 2010 BIG EAST Libero of the Year as announced at the annual banquet held Thursday evening at The Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. "I'm so honored to have received this award couldn't have done it with my teammates and coaches," Maroon stated. This has been such a great season and we are all really excited to be here at the BIG EAST tournament. We're going to play hard tomorrow and out out a great effort to keep this going as long as we can."
Maroon was a unanimous selection for Libero of the Year and helped boost Villanova to 11 conference wins, the most in program history. She becomes the first Wildcat to earn the award. Maroon led the conference in digs per set with 5.57, recording over 100 more digs than her closest competition. The junior also led the BIG EAST in conference play with 0.70 aces per set, notching 27 for the year. She had 14 matches with 20-plus digs, helping her to an All-BIG EAST First Team selection.
Haverford College volleyball senior Kelsey Cantwell was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-Mid-Atlantic Region Thursday evening. Earlier in the week Cantwell received Centennial Conference Player of the year and first-team all-conference honors.
Cantwell is the sixth Haverford player since 2000 to be named all-region. This season she emerged as Haverford’s primary hitter, leading the team with 3.11 kills per set while her 336 kills were second most in the Centennial. She had at least 10 kills in a match 23 times including each of her last nine, going for 17 and 16 once and 15 twice. She played a big role on defense as well, averaging 2.59 digs per set and reaching double-digits 12 times. The program leader with 219 service aces, Cantwell maintained that prowess with 48 this season.
Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) was a First Team All-CAA selection to highlight five honors collected by the James Madison volleyball team as the CAA handed out awards prior to its annual volleyball awards banquet on the eve of the conference championships Friday evening.
Jessica Sears joined Winton on the All-ODAC First Team. The 2009 ODAC Rookie of the Year, Sears, led the team and ranks fifth in the conference with 280 total kills to earn a spot on the All-ODAC First Team. On the defensive side of the net, Sears ranks third in the ODAC with 4.18 digs per game. Sears also tallied 34 aces.
LANCASTER, Pa. – Haverford College volleyball senior Kelsey Cantwell was named Centennial Conference Player of the Year as announced by the league office Thursday. In addition to Cantwell’s honor she was also named First-Team All-Centennial Conference while junior Kate Comey earned second-team honors.
Cantwell is the third consecutive Ford to earn player of the year honors, joining Rachel Salvo (2007) and Rebecca Salvo (2008-09). Cantwell was also first-team as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore.

Haverford’s offense led the conference with 12.33 kills per set thanks to the play of Comey. She led all Centennial setters in assists for the third season in-a-row, handing out 1,108 which was an average of nearly 10 assists per set. In conference matches Comey dished out 375 assists and had 35 or more in six of 10 matches. Last season Comey was named second-team in addition to all-region and All-America accolades.
Senior Lindsay Callahan(Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) was named the JMU Days Inn Invitational Most Valuable Player after recording a combined 30 kills and 22 digs in a pair of wins at Sinclair Gymnasium/Godwin Hall Saturday. James Madison started the day with a 3-1 win over Delaware State before capping the tournament with a 3-0 win over Lehigh.
After winning the first set in convincing fashion, Appalachian State University volleyball was not able to hang on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountaineers suffered just their second loss of the 2010 campaign, falling 3-1 to Indiana State. The defeat is the Black and Gold’s first loss away from the Holmes Center this season and drops the Apps to 8-2 on the season. Blasingame earns all tournament honors in the weekends effort.
McCarter was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her performance this weekend.
Senior Fernanda Bartels posted a double-double with 19 assists and a team-high 18 digs while juniors Kelly McCarter and Noelle Fanella chipped in 13 and 11 digs apiece. Fanella led all Patriots with 10.5 points while TCU (5-4) had Irene Hester pace the offense with 13 kills and seven aces.
The Villanova volleyball team extended its win-streak to seven matches en route to winning the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-12) sweep of host school Corpus Christi on Saturday evening.
Junior Maggie Mergen was chosen as tournament MVP for her performance this weekend and classmate Kim Maroon earned all-tournament honors.
In a total team effort, the Villanova volleyball team concluded the Big 5 Tournament with its third consecutive victory after earning a hard fought 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12) victory over host school Penn on Saturday evening at The Palestra.
The Wildcats (4-3) won the Big 5 Tournament as junior Kim Maroon was named tournament MVP for her performance over the weekend as she collected 24 digs.
The George Mason women's volleyball team hosted the championship match of its 2010 Patriot Invitational on Saturday evening but ran into a hot-hitting Charlotte team which defeated the Patriots in straight sets, with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.
It was a successful debut to the 2010 season for the Villanova volleyball team turning in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) over Campbell at the Carolina Classic hosted by North Carolina.
In her first match since early in 2009, redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich led the squad with 14 kills. Junior Maggie Mergen connected for 13 kills and hit a .333 clip.
Junior Kim Maroon got back to familiar form leading the Wildcats defensively with 24 digs, while classmate Courtney Oertli gave out 25 assists and freshman Alyssa Anderson dished out 15 in her collegiate debut.

Junior opposite hitter/middle blocker Holly Goode and head coach Pat Kendrick added a pair of footnotes to one of the most successful seasons in recent George Mason women's volleyball history, as they received the State Player and Coach of the Year Awards, as selected by a vote of Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).

Junior Holly Goode has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's All-East Region Team, while sophomore Kelsey Bohman earned honorable mention from the AVCA, which announced its selections on Wednesday. The two players were recognized two weeks ago as part of the All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team.
A 6'1" middle blocker/opposite hitter, Goode earned CAA Player of the Year honors after she finished third in the conference with 403.5 points, an average of 3.70 including 3.17 kills per set. Goode was also selected the Most Outstanding Performer of the CAA Championship after posting back-to-back 20-kill performances in leading the Patriots to their eighth conference title and first since 2003. For her efforts during the tournament, she was named one of Collegiate Volleyball Update's Top Performers on Dec. 1. The Virginia Beach, Va., native was a two-time CAA Player of the Week and was named to three All-Tournament Teams in 2009.

"Kim had an outstanding season and I am glad that she is being recognized by the AVCA," head coach Josh Steinbach said. Junior middle blocker/opposite hitter Holly Goode had a breakout season in 2009 for the George Mason women's volleyball team, and the Colonial Athletic Association has rewarded her efforts by naming her its Player of the Year.
The junior led the Patriots with 303 kills in 96 sets. She ranked third in the CAA in kills per set (3.16), fifth with a .293 attack percentage and third in points per set with 3.68. Goode also contributed defensively, ranking second on the team with 220 digs and third on the squad with 81 total blocks.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native tallied nine double-doubles this season, second-most on the team. She is the first Mason player since 2003 to receive CAA Player of the Year accolades, when Aline Pereira won the last of her three consecutive awards.

Junior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) registered eight kills and seven digs for the Dukes. She became just the third player in JMU history to surpass 1,000 kills for her career as a junior, the ninth to reach the mark overall. She also climbed from sixth to fourth in career attack attempts with 2,993.

Jessica Sears earned ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition. She proved solid on both sides of the ball in her first collegiate campaign. She is second on the team with 222 kills (2.34 kpg) and 377 digs (3.97 dpg). She recorded double figure kills 10 times and had 20 or more digs on five different occasions. She had a season-high 15 kills against Salisbury, a match in which she also collected 22 digs.
April Hines earns her third consecutive second-team choice as well. Hines has recorded 159 kills on the season which is fourth on the Yellow Jacket squad and her 77 total blocks defensively was tops on the R-MC squad and her .089 stuffs per game ranks fifth among ODAC leaders.
Lindsey Spears earns honorable mention in the ODAC. Spears, who played one year for Division II Catawba College before transferring to Virignia Wesleyan as a sophomore, has been an integral part of the Marlins' success for two seasons. A communcations major, Spears also owns a 4.00 grade point accume. She has played and started in every match this season for the Marlins and is one of the team leaders in kills, total attacks, hitting percentage, aces, digs, and total blocks. That follows a very successful first season in 2008 when she ranked No. 1 for VWC in block assists, No. 2 in solo blocks and total blocks, No. 3 in kills, and No. 4 in aces. She was also the 2009 W.B. Shafer Jr., Scholar-Athlete award winner at VWC. Spears is also one of two ESPN/CoSIDA academic award recipients in the 2009-10 season for Virginia Wesleyan.
The good news from St. Louis for the Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team is that the Marlins tied the VWC program record for victories at 23 with a 3-1 victory over Tenneessee's Rhodes College in the Bears Classic II hosted by Washington University.
That was the only win in the tournament for the Marlins (23-8) however, as No. 3-ranked and host Washi U. and Culver-Stockton College both posted 3-0 wins over VWC. Washington won 25-12, 25-20, 25-16, and Culver-Stockton posted a 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 decision.
VWC junior Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) was named to the six-person All-Tournament team.
Junior Holly Goode slammed 19 kills on .412 hitting to lead the George Mason women's volleyball team past Hofstra in straight sets on Friday evening. Set scores were 25-23, 25-16, 26-24.
Mason earned its second straight win and fourth in its last five tries as it improved to 15-6 and 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Pride fell to 7-16 and 2-4 in conference.
Junior Holly Goode blasted 18 kills to pace the George Mason women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at its Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison on Saturday evening. Set scores were 29-27, 16-25, 25-13, 25-15.
Virginia Wesleyan turned in several outstanding efforts, including a career-high 51 assists by junior setter Marissa Wood (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge). The total is the fourth highest in VWC history and pushes Wood's career total to 2,017, marking her as the first Marlin volleyball player to surpass the 2,000 plateau in assists.
Junior Holly Goode powered the Mason (11-4) offense with a double-double performance, notching 16 kills on .441 hitting while adding 12 digs.
Holly Goode was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Laura Turner following Sunday's five-set heartbreaker at WVU.
In their final matchup of the Marriott Cavalier Invitational, the Villanova Wildcats (10-4) came away victorious as they defeated Virginia Tech 3-2 (17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon.
Several Wildcats were honored for their outstanding play in the invitational. Maroon and Oertli were named to the all-tournament team while Andersen garnered MVP accolades.
James Madison rallied from a set down to take the final two sets and beat Davidson 3-2 before then falling to host Winthrop 3-0 on the final day of the Wingate Inn Classic on Saturday in the Winthrop Coliseum.
Hall and Viola joined Taylor on the All-Tournament squad from Winthrop. They were joined by Callahan, Peele, Gardner-Webb’s Laura Wilcox, and Georgia Southern’s Moriah Bellisimo and Cristin Haines.
Kelsey Cantwell, who was named MVP of the tournament, also had 11 kills to go along with 17 digs. Rachel Salvo posted 10 kills and 10 digs while Kate Comey handed out 46 assists and made five blocks. Caitlyn Tranquillo helped the defense with 13 digs.
The Fords got to the championship by defeating Massachussetts Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) in the morning. Rachel Salvo amassed 10 kills and 11 digs. Rebecca Salvo and Cantwell each had nine kills while Rebecca Salvo led the defense with 14 digs and Cantwell had 11 and four service aces. Abbassi added seven kills and Tranquillo had 11 digs.
Sophomore Kim Maroon collected 33 digs en route to winning MVP of the Villanova Classic on Saturday evening as the Wildcats defeated George Washington 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 28-26) at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats are back in action on Friday, Sept. 18 against Albany at 4:30 p.m. as they travel to Virginia for the final tournament before conference season begins.

The Villanova volleyball team finished its opening weekend with a perfect record as it completed the Maryland Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) sweep over host squad Maryland on Saturday evening. Sophomore Morgan Petkovich was named tournament MVP with classmates Maggie Mergen and Kim Maroon earning a spot on the all-tournament squad. Congrats Kim, keep up the good work!
