Coastal Volleyball Club has provided me with the best opportunity to be seen by college coaches and to succeed beyond high school.  Without the two years of excellent coaching, discipline, guidance, and humor from Dave and Brandon, I am sure I would not have had the opportunities that have shaped my life today.  As a retired college athlete, I have reflected back on my time during and before college athletics and I realize I have a lot of moments and people to be thankful for, Dave and Brandon especially.  Playing Coastal Volleyball not only paved my way to college, but was one of the best experiences of my life and I would do almost anything to go back!

As parent's of 4 girls who pretty much live and breath volleyball, we have been involved with almost every organization in Hampton Roads at one time or another and as most parents can attest to, that is not always a pleasant experience.  Coaches lieing to the players, having favorites, not talking to the players, being unapproachable, dubious backgrounds, etc.  I have found this NOT to be true of the CVVC organization and staff.

This is our fourth year with Coastal.  With the 4 girls, that comes out to 8 seasons total in several different age groups, blue and gold teams.  One question I always asked my girls after practice or a tournament is, "Did you have fun?"  I can honestly say they have never said NO, win or lose.

The entire organization, even those not coaching one of my girls, have been fantastic.  More importantly, they have been honest when asked a question.  Approachable?  The organization approaches you if you don't approach them.  Bob goes out of his way to talk to as many parents and players as possible.  I have no idea where the man gets his energy from.  One of my daughters was being actively recruited by an organization from the Richmond area.  Bob called, not asking us to stay.  He wanted to know if the organization had done something wrong.  The same goes for the Coaches and their assistants.  They don't run and hide after practice or during tournaments.  They make themselves available to ALL parents.  Not just the chosen few.  This means a lot to the parents.

We keep calling them an organization.  That is the wrong word.  They are more like a family and have treated my entire family the same way.  Even one special child of ours who is not a member of any team.

"Coastal is one of the top clubs on the east coast they have year in and year out prepared their players to succeed at the next level.  Their teams consistently play harder than their competition."

Having been on the Board of the previous volleyball club, I could go into the myriad of team and club problems. Without doing that, let me summarize by saying this: though Kelsey had played volleyball since she was 11 years old, has always loved the game and is very competitive, she was ready to completely quit playing volleyball.

We had considered making the move to Coastal a couple of years earlier and didn't do it. Living on the peninsula, we were concerned about the distance and time factor. In school, Kelsey was also in an International Baccalaureate program. Not making the move was a BIG MISTAKE. The coaches AND players supported her commitment to her academics; 100%. She was never ridiculed by her coaches or her Coastal teammates regarding the large amounts of school work she brought to tournaments...something she always had to face before. Her Coastal teammates brought their best to the practice court and the game court. The girls respected each other and trusted each other to do their job and pull their weight on the court. The difference between the two clubs', coaching and players, was blatantly obvious the day that the girls beat both Austin and Long Beach.

Making the move to Coastal was the best thing we ever did. Kelsey has played volleyball in college for three years now and is a team captain. In retrospect, we should've made the move years before.

I came to Coastal in 2004 after previously playing for Tidewater and Chesapeake Juniors. Like others, I was skeptical about transferring to a new club but the decision was the best one I could have ever made. The coaches are knowledgeable about the game and want nothing more than you to be successful. Coastal teaches the game as well as life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication. Many I have used throughout my college volleyball career as well as everyday life.

I enjoyed playing with Coastal so much that I couldn't bare to stay away. I continued to practice with them while home on breaks and work the camps in the summers. I have returned as a coach to give back utilizing the knowledge I obtained over the years by my former coaches.

How proud can you be to have had all the players that have had played for you, done and doing as well as what you see. You have done a great job!

Playing for Dave at the 18s level in Coastal was something I strived for the moment I started playing club as a freshman. And it proved true to be everything I had imagined. Intense practices and learning knowledge of the game were two things that helped me so much for college, but even more it was the leadership knowledge and the ability to make the people around you on your team better that helped me the most in the college game. I have been considered a leader on my team since the beginning of my first year of college and have now become the captain as a third year and I owe it all to the things I learned playing for Coastal. Skills can be taught at almost any club, but not only does Coastal teach skills better it's also other things like leadership and people skills that Coastal teaches better than the rest.

Prior to coming to Coastal, I played for three years at a different club, and debated whether or not I should switch. After making the final decision to switch to Coastal, I never once in my final two years of playing club regretted the choice to do so. I remember being surprised at the significantly higher level of play, the more demanding practices, and the knowledgeable coaching. My time at Coastal without a doubt both physically and mentally prepared me for volleyball at the collegiate level in a way other area clubs could not have.
