Coach Keith Betts

Keith Betts

Coach Betts is entering his second year with Coastal as the 16 Gold head coach team after a completive year as the 14 Gold head coach.

Keith’s passion for volleyball started at the age of 8 when his brother’s high school coach taught him to serve a floater. Coach Betts’ playing career began a few years later, as a freshman starter for his varsity high school team in Pittsburgh, Pa.  He was a 4 year starter as a setter and occasionally the middle.  During the summer before his senior year Keith set for a team that won a gold medal at the Keystone State Games (PA in state Olympics) and Coach Betts was recruited to play for Penn State; however, at the first high school tournament of his senior year he was injured and didn’t play in another match all year resulting in the lost of a scholarship.  For a few months after high school Keith traveled with a Budweiser team playing outside hitter and setter at the open level.

The following summer Coach Betts joined the US Navy and during the five years Keith served in the Navy, he was a player/coach on three different teams. One team he led to the league championship as their sole setter.  The second, he led to the championship as the setter and OH and was awarded the MVP for the league. On the last team he was a coach/player and coached them to the league championship and to the “All-Navy Ashore East-coast Tournament” Championship where they won and Coach Betts was named the tournament MVP.  At the All-Navy tournament, Keith was asked by the All-Navy Team coach to set for him; unfortunately job restrictions prevented him from joining the team.

When Coach Betts left the Navy he hung up his Mizuno’s to raise a family until years later his daughter tried out for her school team. From that point forward, he coached her from the bench to the court. The following year he was hired as the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach. That same year he worked with the school’s varsity setter who went on to be named to the All Conference First Team. Coach Keith just finished his fourth year coaching at Portsmouth Christian School.

Coach Betts is very passionate about volleyball and at one time he thought it would be his primary livelihood.  During his time playing in the Navy he learned he had an ability to take players who have a strong “volleyball” foundation and help them push past their current skill level to the next.  Having stepped away from the game to focus on a family, it wasn’t until his daughter started playing that refocused his passion for the game of volleyball.

Coach Betts lives in Suffolk with his family and is employed by Science Applications International Corporation.
